Sustainable Communities
Rio Tinto Energy America (RTEA) is a part of an ever-changing global and local community. As part of that community, the company has an obligation to help ensure it continues to grow and becomes vibrant, both economically and socially.
RTEA realizes it must depend on the viability of its local communities to conduct business as much as the communities rely on
RTEA to help meet its needs by paying wages and taxes. Because of this, RTEA incorporates sustainable development into its community plans by balancing economic, social, environmental and good management practices.
Rio Tinto Energy America is committed to building long lasting relationships with its local communities, especially those communities where a large number of
RTEA’s employees live and where principal business transactions occur. RTEA employees live in
four different communities in Wyoming and Montana to support the work done at
our three mine sites.
Community planning
Rio Tinto Energy America's (RTEA) goal is to help its communities and employees become sustainable and viable well into the future. The company accomplishes this goal by getting involved in the communities on a variety of levels that extend beyond making monetary contributions or paying taxes. Community giving is good, community planning is better.
Rio Tinto Energy America, therefore, focuses on community planning. RTEA’s communities’ plan concentrates on developing and maintaining relationships that provide for respect, trust and mutual benefit in the communities affected by its operations. Every year
RTEA actively sponsors and participates in area events and encourages active involvement and personal contributions by employees.
In an effort to more efficiently focus its commitments and community involvement, last year
RTEA conducted Community Needs Assessments (CNA) in each of its communities. Employees interviewed a broad cross section of community members and discussed the critical issues each area faces. With the results,
RTEA plans to concentrate community efforts and contributions toward the critical areas defined in the CNAs.
